EXP POINTS:
CAUSE OF DEATH: Kobato has two separate deaths. For the entirety of her story she was neither living nor dead. Her first and most natural death took place in the hospital. She was weak and ill for the entirety of her life, and although CLAMP never gave a specific name to what she suffered from, it was stated she was in the hospital more than she had ever been home. Already her body was weak, and she was constantly witness to people she would grow close to dying of their own illnesses and diseases. This suggests that her own illness was quite serious. Moreover it's so strong that it clings to her spirit even after she is reincarnated. What ultimately did her in however was a result of a war between the Other World and Heaven. One of their battles tore a hole into the reality of the human world. What leaked through infected her and she died before what should have been her time.

While her death is not explicitly shown here, it is discussed. I imagine that she died surrounded by doctors who frantically attempted to keep her alive, connected to a number of tubes to try and keep her body functioning before it ultimately gave out.

Because of the unusual circumstance of her death a number of things happened at the moment she took her last breath. God spoke to her and explained the situation. He told her that because she had passed away before her time he could grant her one wish, if she would also be willing to work for it. She initially asks god to continue to live. He tells her however that is probably not possible, especially due to the health she had through life. So instead she asks to go to the place where the people she loves are, wherever that would be. God accepts that wish and tells her that if her wish should change in time, she should contact a heavenly messenger. As a result of this deal, while her physical body passes away she is still given form. She descends back down to earth with an Angel inside of her to help sustain her body, and a magic hat to disguise the fact that she's a spirit and not actually living. Her deal is that she must fill up a bottle with the broken hearts of others within a certain amount of time. Once that jar is full she would then be able to have her wish granted.

Which leads to her second death...

Kobato ultimately chooses to change her wish. She fell in love, and decided that rather than use her wish upon herself she wanted to protect the people she had come to care about and make them happy in life. She calls upon a heavenly messenger who temporarily freezes time and tells him that she would like to use her wish to prevent an individual from further threatening a daycare and leave the people alone who are involved with it. This would make Sayaka, the owner, happy which would then also make Fujimoto (the individual she had fallen in love with) happy, too, as he had strong feelings for Sayaka. She thanks Ioryog (the guardian who had looked over her while on Earth) for all his help amid his protests, before finally turning her attention to Fujimoto. Even though he is unable to see or hear her in the moment, she tells him she loves him with a smile, says goodbye, and then disappears. She vanishes knowing that everyone who possessed memories of her would forget that she had ever existed in their lives.
