Name: Kobato Hanato
Canon: Kobato
Canon Point: 44.5
Age: Unknown (Estimated to be 16)
History:
For the majority of the story little is known about Kobato’s past. In fact, Kobato herself doesn’t remember very much. The story begins with her life after having died. Or more exactly existing in a state where she is neither living nor dead. What we know of her life prior to her death is this: Kobato spent her childhood in the hospital. Both weak and ill she spent the majority of her life indoors and frequently witnessed friends and acquiescence die from injuries or illnesses as small as colds. She never had the opportunity to run around, swim, attend school like a normal child, or get to do the activities that individuals her age should have been able to experience in their lives.
At around the age of sixteen, in another plane, a battle raged between Heaven and the Other World. As a result of that battle it tore a hole into the reality of the human world. As a result of this battle, Kobato, who already had poor health, died. Her death however was premature. Because she was not yet supposed to die, God offered to grant her a wish if she could work toward granting it. Initially, she asked to be able to live. God explained that unfortunately that might not be possible, and so asked her to make a different one. To that she only wished to be able to go to the place where the people she loves are. She was told that this was fine, but that since hearts change with time, if that wish should change then she was to call upon a heavenly messenger.
As a result of her deal with god she was given form again and allowed to descend back down to earth. With the help of an angel resting inside her and a magic hat that helped disguise the fact that she is more like a spirit than anything else, she had a human form and was once more able to interact with others. As a result of the process she lost most of her memories of the past and forgot a number of different things, but had been told she would find help along the way. Her guardian turned out to be the King of the Other World, who was punished for his fight against heaven. He was sealed within the body of a small stuffed animal dog and directed to help her. He did so willingly for a number of different reasons and worked to help teach her how to act and behave like a normal human being. But more important, he was there to help her with her mission. In exchange for having her wish granted, she was directed by god to fill up a small jar with the wounded and broken hearts of others. These wounded hearts would take the form of small candies and appear in the jar whenever she managed to help 'heal' someone.
While she starts out very naive and clumsy, even homeless in the beginning, she develops friendships and relationships with others along the way. In her attempt to help heal others she begins work at a daycare, and becomes attached to the workers and children there. Eventually, she even begins to develop romantic feelings for one co-worker in particular, Fujimoto. Because she is no longer alive, she is not allowed to fall in love. Her feelings for him and the devotion she feels toward the daycare slowly begin to change her wish however. When the daycare is threatened and the happiness of it's owner and Fujimoto, who cares greatly for the owner, is threatened, she makes her decision to save them. Instead of use her wish to grant it for herself, she decides to use it on behalf of those people she had come to love. She asks god to save the daycare and that it no longer be threatened. As a result this would lead to the happiness of the one she loved most of all. God accepts her wish and as a result the she truly dies and disappears. As another consequence, any humans who possessed memories of her forgot her existence as well.
The story continues on after this. Eventually she is reborn with her old memories intact, and she once more gets to meet the people she had come to love sixteen years after the fact. For her sake, an individual from the Other World makes a deal with god in order to allow the person she loved to again remember her after all of those years.
Personality:
Naive barely scratches the surface when it comes to Kobato. From the very beginning of the series she’s lost most of her memories. Furthermore, as a child she was too ill to go outside or have a normal childhood. As a result she has no real world experience and everything is brand new to her. Things that should be obvious sometimes stump her to the point that she needs a bodyguard in order to help her learn how to function as a human being.
To add to her innocence, Kobato is remarkably clumsy beyond compare. She’s over enthusiastic, always in a rush, and becomes immediately wrapped up in whatever she tosses herself into. Even the children in the daycare she works at are conscience of her clumsy nature. Often they make things easier on her so that she doesn’t accidentally hurt herself. Due to her odd and precarious state, physical activity can be a little too much for her. Soccer, for instance, wiped her out so completely that she could barely walk after and needed a long break.
Despite all of this, Kobato is an optimist beyond compare. With a cheerful personality she affects and surprises the people she comes across. She touches those around her unconsciously and offers her help to anyone in need. Sometimes when they don’t even need it. Without real world experience, her social game is not always at top form and she can sometimes come across as strange, eccentric, or pushy. She’s often misunderstood as a result. Her desire however is to genuinely help people while filling up her bottle, and her motivation is always sincere. Helping people is second nature to her.
Somewhat child-like, Kobato reacts openly and honestly to everything around her. She struggles to understand negative human motives. At one point an umbrella was stolen from her and she was at a true loss as to why someone would intentionally steal from another. It was beyond her grasp by that point. She simply has trouble understanding why people can be intentionally cruel or harmful.
While Kobato might not understand everything, she isn’t afraid to stand up for herself or others. She will come to her own defense and bicker, if harmlessly. More seriously, she has always come to the aid of someone in genuine physical danger or emotional turmoil. It is second nature to throw herself into harm’s way and defend others. That isn’t to say she is brave without fear however. At one point she physically blocks an individual from harming another, even when she trembles the entire time. In the end, she just doesn’t like to see people hurt, that goes for both friends and foes.
Kobato possesses a large heart, but even she struggles to contain her emotions at times. She can get discouraged and upset, but she usually manages to pull herself out of such a slump. She doesn’t like for others to see her crying or upset. Instead, she prefers to hide that side of her and show the rest of the world a smile. The exception to this is with Ioryogi, her guardian, who she shares her feelings with openly.)
Love ultimately becomes Kobato’s greatest obstacle. Because she is neither living nor dead she is not allowed to fall in love. Love, however, isn’t something she is able to prevent. It takes a long time for her to acknowledge what has happened to her heart and that her desires and wishes have changed. Given her state, however, she knows that her existence is temporary and that ultimately she cannot be with the person she loves most. That realization is painful for her and she comes to the belief that she has only managed to ever be a burden to the person she cares for the most.
In the end, Kobato is a very selfless and sacrificing individual. She uses her wish for the sake of the person she loves, and forfeits the rest of her remaining time in order to help him and the people he cares for. As a result she dies completely, and the memory of her disappears from the lives of all the people she touched, including the man she fell in love with.
The conclusion is that she’s a loving, caring, and selfless girl, with a determined heart and steadfast readiness to help others in anyway that she can. Especially the people she cares about the most. Naive and clumsy as she might be, Kobato has the beautiful ability to look at people without judging them, and accepts others for who they are. The glass is always half full, and she can find the best in a situation even when things are looking down. She’s always eager and ready to learn and looks at the world with bright, wide-eyed wonder.
Abilities:
Kobato is neither living nor dead in canon. Due to that she has a magical crown that encircles her head, signifying that she is no longer alive. This however wont translate into the game. In canon though it stays hidden beneath whatever hat she seems to wear for the day. In addition to this her outfits and clothes are endless despite not possessing any money. It seems that her clothes are magically sustained in some way, as either a result of a particular hat, the halo, or some other kind of unacknowledged magic.
(She does have a very small suitcase? Maybe it possesses endless wardrobe changes… who knows.)
In addition to this she possesses a magic bottle. Each time she heals a wound or emotional affliction within the heart of a person, it fills up with what looks like little candies. Once she fills up the jar, her wish is supposed to come true. This talent however is connected to the jar, so once more I am unsure if this is relevant.
The only major talent Kobato has physically is her ability to sing. She has a beautiful, enchanting voice and is often able to express her feelings through song, even if she is unable to express them through normal conversation. It touches others and draws attention, but like her angel counterpart. Other than this it's her determination and kindness that helps her along her way and to sometimes succeed in helping others.
Strengths:
- Kind
- Sincere
- Determined
- Selfless
- Beautiful singing voice
Weaknesses:
- Niave
- Clumsy
- Physically weak
- Uncomfortable around hospitals
- Panics if someone is sick or injured
God/Shinki: Shinki!
Why?: While I think God might be a cute option for her, in canon she is genuinely dead and lacks memories and I think this just seems like a perfect fit for her honesty.
Cause Of Death: Kobato has two separate deaths. For the entirety of her story she was neither living nor dead. Her first and most natural death took place in the hospital. She was weak and ill for the entirety of her life, and although CLAMP never gave a specific name to what she suffered from, it was stated she was in the hospital more than she had ever been home. Already her body was weak, and she was constantly witness to people she would grow close to dying of their own illnesses and diseases. This suggests that her own illness was quite serious. Moreover it's so strong that it clings to her spirit even after she is reincarnated. What ultimately did her in however was a result of a war between the Other World and Heaven. One of their battles tore a hole into the reality of the human world. What leaked through infected her and she died before what should have been her time.
While her death is not explicitly shown here, it is discussed. I imagine that she died surrounded by doctors who frantically attempted to keep her alive, connected to a number of tubes to try and keep her body functioning before it ultimately gave out.
Because of the unusual circumstance of her death a number of things happened at the moment she took her last breath. God spoke to her and explained the situation. He told her that because she had passed away before her time he could grant her one wish, if she would also be willing to work for it. She initially asks god to continue to live. He tells her however that is probably not possible, especially due to the health she had through life. So instead she asks to go to the place where the people she loves are, wherever that would be. God accepts that wish and tells her that if her wish should change in time, she should contact a heavenly messenger. As a result of this deal, while her physical body passes away she is still given form. She descends back down to earth with an Angel inside of her to help sustain her body, and a magic hat to disguise the fact that she's a spirit and not actually living. Her deal is that she must fill up a bottle with the broken hearts of others within a certain amount of time. Once that jar is full she would then be able to have her wish granted.
Which leads to her second death...
Kobato ultimately chooses to change her wish. She fell in love, and decided that rather than use her wish upon herself she wanted to protect the people she had come to care about and make them happy in life. She calls upon a heavenly messenger who temporarily freezes time and tells him that she would like to use her wish to prevent an individual from further threatening a daycare and leave the people alone who are involved with it. This would make Sayaka, the owner, happy which would then also make Fujimoto (the individual she had fallen in love with) happy, too, as he had strong feelings for Sayaka. She thanks Ioryog (the guardian who had looked over her while on Earth) for all his help amid his protests, before finally turning her attention to Fujimoto. Even though he is unable to see or hear her in the moment, she tells him she loves him with a smile, says goodbye, and then disappears. She vanishes knowing that everyone who possessed memories of her would forget that she had ever existed in their lives.
Vessel: She becomes a hat! As only is fitting. Something like this
Name Location: The back of her upper right shoulder.
Power:
Kobato’s power ability in game is to disguise her master. It would start as just the ability to give him a different wardrobe whenever she is equipped. But as her power and level grows it could expand to something more intricate, such as allowing her god to take on the appearance of someone else, or to become invisible to ayakashi and other gods.
My thought process for this comes from the fact that in canon it was due to her hats that she was able to hide and disguise her true nature as well.
Her limitations would be that she obviously starts out weak without being able to do very much but improves as her level does. As for limitations, it would only be able to last for as long as she possesses energy to do so (and if you guys want to provide a time-limit for that I’m happy to go with that). Also, it would only be able to extend to her master. It wouldn’t be able to touch their surroundings or the world around him.
